Following on from 2008's darkly funny debut Bluebeard's Rooms, David Cronenberg's Wife continue their superb form with this intriguing four-track EP. Tackling the thorny subjects of suicide and being unable to ejaculate would be difficult for most people. However, with a dash of dark humour and a handful of talent these oft-avoided subjects turn into glorious 'anti-folk'.
Let's look at the new material first. 'The Fight Song' is an alternative country number with its subject matter the fall out from a couple's fighting "The words I said/You said were wrong/ that’s what you made me think/but lets just say/they were correct/at the time of publishing". The barbed humour continues throughout with the killer line "And is your body/ your only virtue/…Yes…/but is it really/ such a crime/ to avoid intelligence".
'Suicide - Stretch Out' goes one step further ruminating on both suicide and homicide at railway stations "When the train comes/you'll either want to jump/Yes, you'll want to jump/Or you'll want to push someone down/Which are you?".
Taken from their debut album, 'I Couldn't Get Off' is a faster paced punk-along, and, final track 'I Do Know' sounds is a solid love song, until you listen hard ("What would you think/If I said I married you/Just to get close to your teenage daughter").
As should be evident, this is defined by its lyrical content more than its musical accomplishment, which in itself is good. Tickling your deepest darkest funny bone this is one 'novelty' act where the novelty won't wear off. However, take care. This isn't for sensitive ears and could offend. Oh yes, wickedness this way comes. Prepare to enjoy. - Matt Coxon
