Animal Collective

Brother Sport

Label: Domino

When it comes to Animal Collective most of you will think you’ve heard it all before: “Animal Collective are the most frabtabulous band today, and Merriweather Post Pavillion is the best album ever”. In which case you’ll be glad to hear that this reviewer isn’t going to heap praise on the Baltimore band’s new single ‘Brother Sport’; because heaps of praise wouldn’t nearly be enough to fully describe how good this single is. 'Brother Sport' is like Panda Bear’s ‘Comfy In Nautica’ sped up and played on synths to sound like a frog chorus.  If that last sentence makes no sense then just listen to the track, your ears will thank you. - Will Holloway

Arctic Monkeys

Cornerstone

Label: Domino

The Arctic Monkeys’ career seems to have passed by in a flash; there was the first album full of vim and vigour, the second slightly more contemplative album and now on the third album Humbug comes the more classic rock sound which is well embodied by new single ‘Cornerstone’. Luckily for the listener, the Arctic Monkeys version of classic rock song-writing is music closer to the mellow guitar-strumming and cryptic lyrics of late period Pavement rather than the dullness of rock dinosaurs like U2. - Will Holloway

Florence and The Machine

You’ve Got the Love

Label: Island

A crushingly inevitable choice of single. The musical equivalent of a photograph left in the sun, a year on this track now sounds completely devoid of the vitality that used to be so thrilling. If you haven’t heard this yet it sounds exactly how you’d think it would: pretty much a straight indie cover with harps and Florence’s unique vocals. The power of the original song still shines through but, as with most covers, it just makes you want to listen to the original. - Joe Hooper

Marina and The Diamonds

Mowgli’s Road

Label: SixSeveNine

Re-recorded from its original release in February, this song conjures up a manic, Disney-inspired world full of self-doubt, nightmarish lyrics and DIY jungle noises. The madness never sounds contrived and it’s difficult not to get swept up by the pounding piano chords and addictive chorus. The ‘cuckoo!’s, the whistling and the impersonations of talking silver spoons all contribute to the thrilling ride even if you have no idea where it’s going. Intrigued? Be sure to check out the remix by Mille. - Joe Hooper

We Fell To Earth

Deaf

Label: In Stereo

Cosmic duo, We Fell To Earth make music to get lost in and New single ‘Deaf’ is a prime example of that. Superbly melodic, and as spacious as an entire galaxy, it slowly seeps its way into your affections with its gorgeous female harmonies, and fuzzy, sleepy guitars and keyboards. Somewhere musically equidistant between the Cocteau Twins and School of Seven Bells, and equally as intelligent, ‘Deaf’ is, put simply, an achingly beautiful piece of music. Go listen… - Steve Gislam
