The photographer: "Pedro you look right, Marina left, and Gorky just look at me!"
Has anyone ever really cared what Bonde Do Role really like? Isaac Howlett sits down with the trio and finds out what their favourite things things are, both the love and the hate... everything from cheesy 90s Britpop to boob touching and Ryan Air. Read on!
RECORDS
“Probably nothing but records.” Gorky likes everything about records, “Shopping for records, buying records, hunting records, collecting records, listening to records…” He reckons he’s spent £200 this week alone.
Surprisingly, Gorky likes what he eloquently describes as “shitty” 90s Brit Pop. “Me and Marco (tour manager),” Gorky explains, “See who can come up with the cheesiest Brit Pop - Menswear, Symposium – stuff like that.” While they are in London, Bonde De Role will be meeting one of their biggest heroes, Lauren Laverne. Gorky can’t wait, “We’re going to be like, ‘Oh my God – we can sing her all [Kenicke’s] lyrics,’” he laughs.
SEX
Marina knows exactly what she likes, “First of all, sex,” she says simply. So, has she had more sex because of the music? As it happens, she has - lots more. “It helps. Wow, it helps,” she laughs, “Touring all round the world…” Her mind wanders. So where are the best guys from? “America,” she says promptly, “American guys are the best.” We all want to know why. Marina is silent. She can’t say… “They know how to f***.” Marina giggles and her mood visibly lightens.
BOOKS
Simple - “I used to study literature at university but I quit because of the band” Marina explains.
THE INTERWEB
“You can talk to all your friends around the world and you can build your own friends network. I work a lot on the computer as well”. So, is Gorky the brains behind the operation? “Basically, yeah” he says absent-mindedly.
SLEEP
“The more the better. And of course, the more you sleep the more you feel tired – it’s a vicious circle. You’re like: ‘I’ve just slept for 12 hours and I’m so tired I think I should get to bed again. It’s so good. I’m going to sleep all next week”.
“When they’re partying I’m like, ‘I’m going back to the hotel’” explains Gorky. So they party while he sleeps? Gorky nods. “Yesterday, we played a gig and I stayed there for like, ten minutes, said goodbye to everyone and then went to bed and just got up today for the interviews. Great!”
FOOD
“I love food - as you can see,” SUPERSWEET looks. Gorky laughs, “I love eating well. It’s like with records,I like everything about food too. And I kind of like the crappy food as well. But usually we try and get somewhere nice”.
“My Grandma’s food,” Marina adds, “She knows how to cook lots of stuff. Italian food - the way she cooks pasta - it’s awesome. I miss her. Next week, I’m going to go back to Brazil and I’m going to eat every day.”
Last October, Gorky had a health scare, he had to have his appendix removed. It obviously scared him a lot. “It’s way better to spend like £15 than like £5 on a McDonald’s or something. I think that’s really important.”
BOOB TOUCHING
Apparently, the third thing that Pedro hates the most is when Gorky doesn’t let the rest of the band “touch his boobs”. We’re all crying with laughter. Gorky obviously ignores this.
FAMILY
I’m really close to my family; my dog, my sister, my mother, my grandmother. I miss them so much.” It’s not surprising - she was last home in February and it’s almost May. They’ll go home to their town for just five days and won’t return until November or December.
MUSIC
“Right now, electronic, ‘bleepy’, noisy stuff,” Pedro muses mysteriously. According to Pedro, the best music right now is coming from France. Apart from Bonde Do Role who are slightly different as he explains, “We’re doing really weird dance music but it’s still quite friendly - but not the obvious friendly – that’s what I like”.
RYAN AIR AND JOURNALISTS
Pedro’s voice weighed-down with heavy sarcasm. “The things I hate the most are: Ryan Air, journalists,” he reiterates his point, “I hate Ryan Air and journalists who don’t read our biography and just ask us how the fuck we started and how the fuck we met… it’s the questions I hate.”
“I did this interview yesterday for a French magazine on the phone,” recalls Marina. “He made it really fun – I was chatting with him and I realised when I got off the phone he had made me answer all those questions – how we started etc., and I hadn’t even noticed.”
“So you’re not going to ask us how we met?” Pedro wonders. Nope. “You’re not going to ask us what our lyrics are about, maybe?” Marina asks. No, we’re sure they’re already related to these topics somehow any way.
